New Routine

We go for walks now. All three of us. Everyday.

For the past 7 years I have had to work until 8pm at the earliest. There wasn’t any way for me to go out for a walk around the neighborhood in the sunshine. Then in November I got a promotion and was able to get home by 6 almost every night. A welcome change but being November it would still be another 5 months before I would get to enjoy the feeling of leaving work able to enjoy even a little bit of sun.

I used to come home from work with barely enough time to eat dinner before Liam would fall asleep. Now I come home with hours and hours to play with before bed time. We’ve got a new routine now.

We go for walks.

All three of us.

Everyday.

  1. What a gift this is. A gift to all of you.

As a wife, to a husband who is never home before 8:30 at the earliest and its been that way for the last 26 years, what I wouldn’t give to go for a walk. All of us. Everyday.

There is just something about putting your face to the sunshine, while with those you love, that allows you to belief, for those moments, that all is right with the world.

Please tell Liam that I think he is looking pretty cool in his shades.

  2. The sheer joy of going for a walk – I get it. My girl is a lot older than Liam but we have had similar experiences of being a parent I think. We’ve had some great days in hospital but the fabulous days whether they be going for a walk or something special like the Make a Wish Day my daughter had when she chose to go swimming are usually spent doing something that other families take for granted and it is these that make the harder days bearable. There is no league table of challenges or of hardship. I believe your challenge is absolute in your life and never lesser or greater based on a diagnosis. Your doing a fabulous job and I salute you and your wife and your adorable child.

    1. Thank you so much! Both for reading the blog and for taking the time to comment. I often say that or experience is not harder than that of other parents but only different. We all experience our own unique experiences. I can only hope that by telling our story we can give other parents something to relate to.

Thanks again and it’s nice to meet you.

  3. Like Heather, the concept of going for a walk as a family, including The Husband, is a foreign one. I loved the simplicity of this photo and the expression of your content and gratitude.

    1. For the first ten years of our relationship I was a restaurant cook and manager. I wouldn’t get home until 2 or 3 in the morning so nights and weekends were never spent together. I took the 8pm job to get away from that! These evening walks are something completely new to me and I’m glad it’s clear just how much I am enjoying them.

  4. Looking way cool Master Liam! So happy you all can enjoy this beautiful spring. Love you all Grandmama
