In a report by a New Hampshire newspaper a 91 year old freshman legislator reportedly said that he supports, … well I’ll just let you read the choice bits…
Omand told Foster’s that Harty told her he disagreed with her about the need for funds for mental health services and he believed in eugenics.
“The world population has gotten too big and the world is being inherited by too many defective people,” he told her.
Omand said she asked him to clarify if he meant mentally ill and developmentally disabled and he responded, “I mean all the defective people, the drug addicts, mentally ill, the retarded — all of them.”
“I asked what we should do with them,” Omand said, and Harty said, “I believe if we had a Siberia we should send them to this and they would all freeze and die and we will be rid of them.”
Harty confirmed his comments in an interview with Foster’s Daily Democrat late Thursday afternoon.
[Shaking head in disbelief]
Surely his fellow republicans including the speaker of the New Hampshire House came down hard on him right? I mean standing against taxpayer funds being used for health care is one thing, but believing that we should round up significant portions of the population and leave them to die a horrible, painful death is another kettle of fish (and for what it’s worth I whole-heartedly disagree with both kettles.)
Well no, apparently the other state republicans don’t exactly mind that he believes this just the way he goes about talking about it. According to Talking Points Memo . . .
The catch — he’s a 91 year old, who was swept into office on a GOP wave, and everyone’s basically too deferential to tell him he’s gone too far.
Speaker of the House William O’Brien treated Harty gently over the incident, saying that in the future he hopes he chooses his comments more carefully.”I will talk with him about how he represents the House,” he said…
He added, “With the amount of time and effort he has given us all, he has earned the right to say what he thinks. He needs to appreciate that, as a representative, he will be held to a higher standard.”
I’m just wondering if by Harty’s criteria old age and senility, like say being 91 in politics and believe people you represent deserve to put down like animals for instance, is an offense to warrant a trip to our Siberia?
It’s a family blog and I don’t usually talk politics or swear but…
What an Asshole!
