The absolute best place that a sick kid can be is the intensive care unit at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The absolute worst place that a healthy kid can be is the intensive care unit at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. It’s where all the really nasty bugs like MRSA, H1N1, flu, and all sorts of other nasties hang out and get stronger and more resistant to drugs and antibiotics. So being forced to spend an extra 36 hours in there because of a few people’s lack of communication and a few more people’s unwillingness to listen to Liam’s mother was a tough pill to swallow. The admission was for a scheduled and routine vent settings “tune-up” not to treat any kind of illness. It’s hard enough when your baby is sick to realize that you need to spend another day in the hospital. It’s even harder to take when your child is 100% healthy and you’re told that you need to spend another day in the hospital so the less said about our hospital stay the better. It was filled with frustration, anger and a little more frustration.
All that you really need to know now is that Liam is fine. He is better than fine and right now he is at home where he should be.
I have spent the past month singing the praises about Hasbro and all that they have done for us. The past three days don’t take any of that away. I still love Hasbro. I always will. Our relationship is a long-term one and we’re just fighting right now. The appropriate people (and their bosses too) took responsibility for their mistakes and apologized for the problems that they had caused the family. It may have taken longer than we wanted but we did accomplish everything that we needed to and I am told that the whole incident has been a teaching moment for more than one department on effective communication in the Unit. So I guess that’s the silver lining.
Anyway, Liam was a trooper and handled the whole thing better than his mom and I did. We finally came home today and can start getting back to our normal routines but first we all need some sleep. We have a nurse coming overnight tonight so that Karin and I can get a real night’s sleep. Regular blogging should resume over the weekend. Til then here’s a picture of the whole family during the Walk for Hasbro. It was sent to us by Maggie at Hasbro who you all may know as the sweet young lady who shared the spotlight with us on The Rhode Show last week.
Have a great weekend everybody!
